Plain Roof Tiles & Tiling

picture of a windmill and and house with a clay roof Your choice of tile will depend on the aesthetic requirements of the building, the environmental factors such as weathering and wind force, and on the development budget available.

At Supreme O Roofing, we lay a wide range of high quality Concrete and Clay roof tiles and fittings from leading brands such as Marley Eternit, Sandtoft, Redland and Forticrete. We also provide samples and expert advice to help you make the right choice.

The Concrete Plain tile creates a highly desirable clay effect, but is less expensive. They are available in a wide range of colours and textures.

The Clay Roof tile brings warmth and character to the appearance of a building. They are also available in a wide variety of permanent colours and textures which over time will weather and mellow, but never fade. Clay roof tiles are a natural and durable roofing product, which will enhance the aesthetic appearance of a roof. By withstanding the natural climatic elements and improving with exposure, Clay Tiles can really enhance the appeal of a building.

Clay Tiles can be bought new with an artificially aged appearance so that they will blend in with any older tiles and look natural on a historic building. Clay roof tiles are a part of the British architectural heritage and add to the beauty of the built environment.

Brief History

Plain tiles are small and rectangular in format and in one form or another have been with us since before the 14th Century. We know this, because a tax was levied on roof tiles. To ensure that the tax was levied evenly and correctly an Act of Parliament decreed that all plain tiles were made to a uniform size: 10.5 by 6.5 inches. The Act has long since been repealed, but the size has remained constant, only adjusted slightly to 265 by 165mm in the mid 1970s, requiring 60 tiles per sq metre. Similarly, the method of laying them has changed surprisingly little.

picture of old clay tiles with nails It is believed that the first single lap clay roof tiles were formed from baked earth or clay around 2700 BC. The Romans were the first to make and use fired clay tiles in England but the practice died shortly after their occupation ceased.

Tiling in London - In 1212 AD King John issued building by-laws for London that required combustible roof coverings to be replaced with clay tiles. At about the same time the Archbishop of Canterbury banned the use of thatch on buildings near the Cathedral. From this time clay tiles have never been out of production.

Britain's architectural diversity and the distinctive characteristics of villages, towns and regions has arisen as a result of local preferences and traditions and the local availability of building materials.

Plain Tiles perform by overlapping densely up to three tiles deep to achieve a watertight layer. It is this functional requirement that creates their rustic appearance, adding a sense of detail and texture to the roof.
